Story:
Once upon a time, there were six blind men who lived in a village in India. One day, they were talking to each other about an elephant. The first man said, “There is an elephant in the next village.” The second man asked, “What is an elephant?” The first man replied, “I don’t know.” All the other men asked, but none of them knew either. So, they went to the next village to find out.
When they arrived, the first blind man touched the elephant. He could not see it, but he could feel it. He felt its trunk. He said, “An elephant is like a snake.” “It is long and flexible.” The second man touched the elephant. He could not see it, but he could feel it. He felt its tusks. He said, “No, no, an elephant is like a knife.” “It is sharp and smooth.”
When the third man touched the elephant, he felt its ear. He said, “Now I know what an elephant is.” “It is like a leaf, big and flat.” It was the fourth man’s turn. He touched its leg. He said, “No, you are all wrong.” “It is like a tree. It is round and solid.”
The fifth man felt the elephant’s side with his hand. He said, “It is like a wall.” “It is tall and wide.” Finally, the sixth man touched the elephant. He felt its tail. He said, “Well, I think it is like a rope. It is long and thin.”
Each blind man had a different idea of what an elephant looked like, and they began to argue. Each man thought he was right.
The elephant got tired of the arguing so he said, “Excuse me. You are all partly right. My trunk is like a snake. My tusks are like knives. My ears are like big leaves and my legs are like trees. My sides are like walls and my tail is like a rope. You must listen to each other, because each of you has something useful to say. Then you will not have to argue.”
The elephant turned and walked away. The blind men felt foolish. They shook hands and promised to listen to each other in the future.
